He described the announcement as “an exciting opportunity to celebrate the importance of rural America.”Biden’s reelection campaign said the president's trip to Minnesota was planned before Phillips announced his candidacy. Political Cartoons View All 1227 ImagesBiden's trip, coming so soon after Phillips’ announcement, will be an opportunity for the president to try to snuff out any potential support for his nascent primary challenger. Invited guests to Biden's fundraiser include past donors to Phillips' congressional campaigns, as well as Minnesota Democratic Gov. Phillips' campaign will feel “almost like a cold glass of water being thrown in his face," said Ken Martin, chair of Minnesota Democrats and a Democratic National Committee vice chair. “I welcome President Biden back to Minnesota, where Everyone’s Invited!,” Phillips said in a statement about Biden's trip, referencing his campaign slogan.

President Biden’s decision to send cluster munitions to Ukraine has angered a wide swath of Democrats, who are accusing his administration of making a hypocritical decision that risked the moral standing of the United States. The move answered a monthslong clamor from congressional Republicans to supply Kyiv with the weapons, but Mr. Biden’s political allies denounced it. “A victory for Ukraine is an essential victory for democracies across the globe, but that victory cannot come at the expense of our American values and thus democracy itself,” Representative Chrissy Houlahan, Democrat of Pennsylvania and an Air Force veteran who co-chairs a bipartisan congressional caucus on unexploded ordinance and demining, said in a statement on Friday. “I challenge the notion that we should employ the same tactics Russia is using, blurring the lines of moral high ground.”She and other Democrats argued that cluster munitions of the kind the administration plans to send to Ukraine pose indiscriminate harm to civilians long after they are used in combat.

House Republicans successfully quashed an effort to hold a vote on expelling George Santos. But Republicans moved to refer it to the House Ethics Committee, effectively tabling it for now. Even House Republicans from New York — some of the strongest intraparty critics of Santos — voted for the referral resolution. There's also the political reality that McCarthy can ill afford to lose a reliable vote: Republicans hold the chamber by a four-vote margin, and McCarthy's grasp of the speaker's gavel depended on Santos in January. In the meantime, the criminally charged congressman will continue to serve as a loyal vote for Republicans.
The bill would eliminate the requirement to be employed in public service at the time of debt relief. It would ensure that borrowers that complete the required 120 qualifying payments will get loan forgiveness. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program was created in 2007 to give government and nonprofit workers student-loan forgiveness after ten years, or 120 qualifying payments. "Since its creation, the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program has had persistent issues that have made it difficult for public service employees to access student debt relief in exchange for their dedicated service to our nation," Menendez said in a statement. "Our public servants, like police officers and teachers, rightfully have access to student loan forgiveness after ten years of public service," Houlahan said in a statement.
Republican Rep. Liz Cheney has endorsed Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin for reelection. Cheney has crossed party lines because Slotkin challenger Tom Barrett is a 2020 election denier. A Jan. 6 committee leader, Cheney has resolved "to make sure those people don't get elected." Slotkin, a two-term lawmaker, is facing off against Barrett, a Michigan state senator, this November. Barrett brushed off the endorsement as grandstanding by "establishment war hawks" with a "senseless thirst for more foreign entanglements."
